Chapter 23: Mom makes pancakes then Nick and Joseph go for a bicycle ride, stopping at the secret spot on the Riverpark. Back at Joseph's house they find an article with Joseph's photograph from the previous evening's recital. On it is a note of encouragement from Joseph's father which delights Joseph. Kevin speaks to Tony at school and Tony expresses his friendship with Nick. When Kevin relates this to Nick he feels concern for Tony and remembers him with Mixed emotions, prompting Nick to reflect on the difference in his feelings for Tony and for Joseph.
Chapter 24: Joseph spends Thanksgiving with his family at his aunt's house in Oklahoma City and Nick's family eats at Tally's restaurant. When they meet at school on Monday Joseph invites him over to visit. Joseph reports that his mother remained sober over the holiday but only with great effort. The lovers enjoy their reunion. Later, Joseph's mother has her court date and things go very poorly. She is sentenced to 60 days of alcoholic rehab and Joseph is quite distressed. Nick's family encourages Joseph to stay with them for as long as necessary. They talk with Jack, and Joseph is somewhat encouraged by their support.
Chapter 25: Nick's family encourages Joseph to stay with them while his mother is in rehab. Nick and Joseph divert themselves with a movie. Joseph has a rare interview with his father who agrees that under the circumstances he has permission to stay with the Bradys on the weekends although he expects to pay them something for keeping him, an idea that Mr. Brady rejects. Joseph's father takes Mrs. Anderson to begin her stay in rehab, reports that she is remorseful and they hope that the experience will be a success. Nick's family is very concerned for Joseph and determined to help him through this difficult situation.
