In chapter 18, Nick returns home in the morning to have a talk with Jack about his friend Tony. He is shocked to learn that Tony and his brothers are being pimped out by their father. Jack tells him what he knows about this difficult situation. Nick shares with jack about his growing relationship with Joseph and his gratitude for his brother Kevin. After church jack treats the boys to a hamburger then drops them off at Joseph's house where Joseph reveals the extent of his mother's drinking problem. The boys go for a bike ride and on their return Joseph is called in to confront his angry mother. Nick returns home to reflect on how grateful he is for his own family.
In chapter 19, Nick shares his concern about Joseph's mother with his friend Jack who educates him on the difficult reality of alcoholism. Nick is informed that Joseph's mother has objected to Nick's frequent presence and the almost daily visits must end. Nick finds his brother Kevin to be a source of comfort and support. Jack gives Nick an update on his friend Tony. Nick is horrified to learn the extent of that family's problems, and grateful for his own. Nick and Joseph are able to see each other at choir practice and when Nick is issued a choir robe and allowed to join in the service on Sunday, his family makes good on their promise. Joseph's parents are away for the day and he and Nick are able to enjoy a quick reunion.
In chapter 20, Nick and Joseph now only see each other briefly at school, during the choir practice and at church. Nick learns from his brother Kevin that Tony and his brother Carlos have been sent to the Tulsa Boys Home but are attending classes at Kevin's school. At church on Sunday Nick finds Joseph very upset and is invited to come to Joseph's house. Once there, Joseph tearfully informs Nick that his mother did not return home the evening before and Joseph fears the worst. Alice informs them that Mrs. Anderson has been arrested for drunk driving and is being held in jail. Joseph tries to tell Alice how grateful he is for her care. Nick attempts to comfort Joseph in the best way he can.
